Roger & Maite

A Different Way to See the City

Roger Huang came to San Francisco carrying the wounds of a difficult childhood, while Maite, an immigrant from the south of France, brought her own story of resilience and hope. Together they were searching for purpose in a city full of contrast. Working downtown, they saw the poverty, violence, and loneliness of the Tenderloin every day.

One moment changed everything. After witnessing a young boy being harassed on the street, Roger felt God ask a question he could not ignore:

“What would you do if that was your son?”

That question became the beginning of a lifelong calling for Roger and Maite, not just to serve the Tenderloin, but to truly see the people living there.

Showing Up Again and Again

The next day, Roger and Maite returned to the streets with 50 sandwiches in hand. They did not come once and move on. They came back again the following day, and again after that, choosing consistency and presence over hesitation.

What began as a simple act of compassion slowly became a way of life, rooted in prayer, faithfulness, and a deep love for the city and the people within it.

Over the last 40 years, that steady commitment has grown into San Francisco City Impact, serving thousands of families through education, outreach, healthcare, food access, and community support in the heart of the Tenderloin.
